Wasted
Coffee’s on the counter, there’s lipstick on the cup
The years are in the lines on the face you’re making up
The news is on the TV, the soaps are done by 10
The kids are in the care of the hands you left them in
You take the cake out of the freezer and leave it in the sun
Alone for 8 more hours, it’s time enough to run
There’s a little diner off the highway out of state
With a poster on the wall of houses in the Bay
It was 20 years ago someone would touch your face
And listen with their heart to anything you had to say
Count your blessings, bills are paid - it’s just easier this way
Window dressing choices made - it’s just easier
Fairy tales and teenage dreams roll up nice and tight and neat
But you’ll forget they even lived and you’ll learn how to forgive
You made a reservation, invited all your friends
You’re past the hesitation, but you know how to bend
What are people thinking, you know just what they’ll say
But you can’t bear the boredom, they’re jealous anyway
Someone’s husband reaches for a glass of Chardonnay
It’s not quite like the movies but it’s easier this way
In a couple hours you might find a way to be
Focused on the flowers out the window on the tree
In another 20 years it’ll be a memory
While you’re staring at the walls and stirring sugar into tea
Count your blessings, bills are paid - it’s just easier this way
Window dressing choices made - it’s just easier
Fairy tales and teenage dreams roll up nice and tight and neat
And you’ll forget they even lived and you’ll learn how to forgive
Forgive yourself the choice to stay, learn the part you chose to play
It’s just easier this way
And I know you’ll be OK, it’s just easier this way
